Frozen shoulder — the clinical term is adhesive capsulitis — is one of the most frustrating musculoskeletal conditions in existence. It begins with shoulder pain that gradually worsens. Then the shoulder simply stops moving.
How Frozen Shoulder Develops
Phase 1 — Freezing (2–9 months): Increasing shoulder pain, especially at night. Range of motion begins to diminish. This is the most painful phase.
Phase 2 — Frozen (4–12 months): Pain may subside slightly, but shoulder stiffness is at its worst. Many daily activities become impossible without compensation from the neck and upper back.
Phase 3 — Thawing (6–24 months): Range of motion gradually returns. This phase can be accelerated significantly with appropriate intervention.
Who Gets Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is more common in people between 40–70, in women, and in people with diabetes (where the risk is 3–5 times higher). It also frequently follows shoulder injuries, surgeries, strokes, or any period of prolonged arm immobilization — which is relevant for Sharonville's working population, where upper-extremity injuries are more common than in sedentary occupations.
What Massage Therapy Does
In the freezing phase, massage works on the surrounding musculature while using light passive mobilization to maintain tissue quality and slow the progression of restriction.
In the frozen phase, targeted capsular work, myofascial release, and progressive range-of-motion stretching help maintain and recover what mobility exists.
In the thawing phase, more aggressive mobilization, deep friction, and PNF stretching can dramatically accelerate return to full function.
