Wyoming, Ohio's active and health-conscious community includes a surprising number of committed stretchers — people who do their morning routine, maybe hit a yoga class, and still can't touch their toes or turn their head without stiffness. If you're one of them, there's a physiological explanation.
The Myotatic Reflex: Why You Can't Stretch Your Own Hamstrings
When a muscle is stretched — particularly quickly or forcefully — the nervous system activates a protective reflex called the myotatic reflex (or stretch reflex). Spindle cells in the muscle detect the stretch and immediately signal the muscle to contract, preventing the stretch from going further. This is a safety mechanism. It's also why solo stretching has a ceiling.
Assisted stretching circumvents this ceiling using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) — a technique that exploits the nervous system's own mechanisms to achieve deeper stretch than the reflex would otherwise allow.
How PNF Actually Works
In contract-relax PNF, your therapist brings you to the end of your comfortable range of motion. Then you're asked to press gently against their resistance — contracting the very muscle being stretched. After 6–8 seconds of this isometric contraction, you release, and your therapist guides you into a deeper stretch than you could reach before.
The result: flexibility gains in a single session that would take weeks or months of solo stretching to achieve.
Who Benefits Most in Wyoming
Golfers and tennis players seeking thoracic rotation and hip mobility for improved swing and serve mechanics.
Wyoming High School athletes who are restricted in key movement patterns — tight hip flexors limiting sprint mechanics, restricted thoracic extension limiting overhead ability.
Adults 40+ who have noticed flexibility declining and want to reverse the trend before it affects their quality of life.
What a Session Looks Like
Assisted stretching sessions at Hoh Cincy run 45–60 minutes. You stay clothed in comfortable athletic wear. There is no oil, no draping, and no passive lying — you are an active participant in every stretch. Most clients leave with 2–3 home exercises to maintain gains between sessions.
